Habits for Healthy Eyes

Our eyes, just like our body, need to be in great shape for them to be well for years to come. Many eye diseases and conditions have no symptoms until it is too late. Here are some suggestions of what you can do in order to preserve and maintain healthy, happy eyes:


Eat Right. This is too easy. All you need to do is to eat foods that are good for your eyes. Food that contain important vitamins, mineral and antioxidants such as beta carotene, lutein, vitamins A, C and E, omega-3 fatty acids and zinc can strengthen the eyesight. Examples of food with these nutrients are carrots, citrus fruits like orange and lemon, green leafy vegetables like cabbage, spinach and kale, fish like salmon, tuna, sardine and mackerel, eggs, grapes and dark berries.


Protect Your Eyes. Eye protection is also vital when it comes to maintaining healthy eyes. It is as simple as wearing a pair of sunglasses when you are outdoors. UV rays can damage the surface of your eyes as they do your skin. Over time, UV exposure can put you at higher risk for cataracts. Wear UVA and UVB coated lenses to reduce those risks. Whilst it is not the brand of sunglasses that is important, the cheaper varieties do not offer you these protections. If you wear contact lenses, thoroughly wash your hands before putting in or removing them. Incorrect care of lenses can lead to keratitis, an inflammation to the eye’s cornea.

Have Proper Lighting. When working, have adequate lighting at the area. Ensure that the light is not too bright or low. You can opt for lower intensity bulbs or fluorescent lights. If you are always on the computer, adjust its brightness, text size and contrast so that it suits your vision and make you feel comfortable. It is recommended that you do some stretching and exercise to prevent computer vision syndrome, back pains and eye fatigue. Eye doctors recommend looking up and away from the computer every 20 minutes to allow the eye muscles to relax. You can also do some palming exercises.


Do Not Rub the Eyes. Vigorous rubbing can damage more than relief. It can stretch the sensitive skin around the eyes, cause corneal abrasion and elevate eye pressure and cause visual distortions (such as seeing halos).Instead of vigorous rubbing, you can try placing cold compress for instant relief. Another method to try is by soaking a cloth in ice cold water or refrigerate used teabags several hours. Then, place them on your eyes for at least 10 minutes. Three to four times a day should do the trick. Eye doctors suggest to always find the cause of the itchy eyes before looking for the solution. For example, if scented candles may be the cause of your itchy eyes, it is best to avoid them. Whenever soap or other irritants get in your eyes, use water to flush the substance out immediately. Pouring water onto eye from a clean cup for 15 minutes should do it. It is best to see an eye doctor if pain persists.

Lastly, most eye care experts recommend that you have a comprehensive eye exam every one to two years, depending on your age, risk factors and whether you currently wear corrective lenses. Not to forget, children require regular eye exams to detect vision problems that may interfere with learning.

Practice these tips and your eyes will thank you for it. If you treat them well, you will be able to enjoy good eye health for a long time.
